What is required for my pet to undergo surgery?
For all standard surgeries we require all pets be up to date on core vaccinations unless otherwise deemed safe and necessary by one of our veterinarians and a surgical consult prior to the surgery to discuss risks, establish health of the patient with a physical exam, and provide a complete estimate for your pet’s procedure. We strive to provide absolute safety for your pet by requiring preanesthetic bloodwork prior to your pet’s procedure to confirm kidney and liver health prior to anesthesia.
Is anesthesia safe for pets?
It's completely natural to feel nervous about your pet undergoing anesthesia - most loving pet parents do. The good news is that modern veterinary anesthesia is remarkably safe, and we take every precaution to keep it that way.
Before any procedure, we perform a thorough physical exam and pre-anesthetic bloodwork to check how your pet's organs are functioning and catch anything that might affect how they handle anesthesia. This lets us tailor the anesthesia plan specifically to your pet - taking into account their age, breed, weight, and health history.
During the procedure itself, your pet is never left unattended. A dedicated member of our team monitors their heart rate, breathing, oxygen levels, blood pressure, and temperature continuously from start to finish. We use modern anesthetic drugs that are gentle on the body and can be adjusted in real time if needed.
Recovery is just as closely watched. Your pet is kept warm and comfortable, and one of our team members checks on them regularly until they're fully awake and stable - we don't send anyone home until we're confident they're ready.
While no medical procedure is entirely without risk, the combination of pre-anesthetic screening, individualized planning, and vigilant monitoring makes serious complications rare.
